There is something truly special about an artisan market. It’s more than just shopping—it’s about meeting the people behind the products, hearing the stories behind each creation, and celebrating craftsmanship in a world that often moves far too quickly.

As the maker behind LouLou Ceramics, artisan markets have become one of my favourite parts of running my small business.

Every Piece Has a Story

Every mug, tumbler, bowl and trinket dish I bring to a market has been designed, thrown on the wheel, trimmed, glazed and fired by hand in my pottery studio. Many hours go into each piece before it ever reaches a market stall.

Seeing someone pick up a mug, feel the shape, run their fingers over the glaze and smile because it feels “just right”.

Meeting the People Behind the Purchases

One of the greatest joys of attending markets is chatting with customers.

I love hearing:

• Which mug becomes someone’s new morning coffee favourite.

• Stories about gifts for loved ones.

• Why someone has chosen a particular glaze.

• How a piece reminds them of the sea, nature or a special memory.

These conversations are what make handmade ceramics so meaningful.

Supporting Small Businesses

Artisan markets are full of incredibly talented makers.

From jewellers and artists to candle makers, bakers and woodworkers, every stall represents someone’s passion, creativity and countless hours of hard work.

When you shop at an artisan market, you’re not supporting a large company—you are supporting real people, local families and independent businesses.

The Community Spirit

One of my favourite things about markets is the sense of community between makers.

Everyone understands the early mornings, the careful packing of fragile creations, the excitement when someone makes their first purchase of the day, and the satisfaction of packing up a little lighter than you arrived.

There is always encouragement, advice and plenty of laughter shared throughout the day.
